How to Check Whether an Online Coupon Is Legitimate
Online coupons can help shoppers save money, but not every code or promotion shared on the web is current or legitimate. Before using a coupon, confirm the details with the merchant and avoid sharing sensitive information with an unfamiliar site.
1. Start with the merchant’s official website
Search the merchant’s own website for the promotion, or follow links from its verified communication channels. Compare the offer description with the page where the code is redeemed. A third-party coupon listing is a lead to investigate, not proof that the offer is active.
2. Check the expiry date and conditions
Read the fine print for the end date, eligible products, minimum spend, country restrictions, new-customer requirements and exclusions. Some discounts apply only to selected items or cannot be combined with other promotions.
3. Test the code before relying on it
Enter the code on the merchant’s official checkout page and confirm that the discount appears before paying. A code displayed on a page is not “verified” merely because it has been published. If a site labels a code verified, it should have a real checking process and a recent check date.
4. Watch for common warning signs
- A site asks for your account password or payment details just to reveal a code.
- A promotion promises guaranteed cash or an unusually valuable gift with no clear terms.
- The destination domain imitates a known brand but has a different spelling.
- You are pressured to pay an unexpected fee to claim a supposedly free reward.
5. Understand affiliate links
Some deal websites earn referral commissions when visitors click a link or complete a qualifying action. A disclosed affiliate relationship does not automatically make an offer unsafe, but it should be clearly explained and should not replace independent checking.
Before you redeem
Confirm the final price, delivery costs, renewal terms and refund policy on the merchant’s website. If the terms are unclear, do not proceed. Coupon availability can change at any time, and savings are never guaranteed until the merchant accepts the code.
Editorial note: This guide provides general shopping-safety information. Always rely on the merchant’s current terms for a specific promotion.
